This could be worrying

I’m starting to worry about what’s going through my mind when I start to Draw, maybe this is down to the fact that I’m not planning out what I want to do in advance. The final results just seem to be a random selection of when I’m thinking about at the time, however this seems to be more a chaotic jumble of random things added into a page (or iPad screen as the case maybe).

It’s not that I don’t like the drawings I’m doing, I love them…… It’s the comments I’m getting from Friends that are concerning.

I’m just weird.

My Latest one is no exception.

Ok, so this is the thing……  A few weeks ago I went back to using Facebook after a few years away, i’ve been using other Social Networks such as Twitter and Instagram. I was a little sceptical about returning as I had been becoming very disalusioned with the whole site and its Privacy Settings. It had also started to become full of adverts and Games.

I decided I’d deactivate my Account and leave.

A few years later I felt like I was becoming very anti-social and was possibly missing out on information and interaction with friends and family I hadn’t seen in a loving time.

It’s now been eight weeks since I went back and I’m now getting to the place where I was before I left, there is information I feel I need and an awful lot I don’t.

So this is how I see the Breakdown:-

  • 5% is worthy information, that is extremely positive, worthwhile and needs to be seem by as many people as possible. This is a mixture of Charity, Good Causes and people that need help.
  • 5% is just pure and simply attacks at other people, this usually takes the form of indirect digs via the form of Pictures or Status Updates, this is Negativity I DO NOT NEED in my life at the moment.
  • 10% is other information that is nice to see, whether it be pictures of friends, updates on what they are doing, or just the commenting on other peoples updates which are also worth the time of reading.
  • The final 80% is where I have the problem, this is generally crap that has been shared on a vast array of subjects which generally have No Relevance to me and I assume the majority of Friends and family ‘The Share’ reaches.

So you can maybe see my dilemma, does the 15% of information I want to see outweigh my annoyance at the vast amount of pure dross I have to ensure to get to see the things I want to see.

At the point someone might interrupt me and tell me there is a setting I can just turn on and all my woes (Shared Dross) will disappear in one click of the mouse or touch of the screen………… Please someone tell me there is a setting, as there is only a certain amount of ‘Dog Memes’ that any man can take without breaking.

I await a response in Hope more than expectation.

Social Networking – Scaling Back

I woke up this morning to a number of Social Networking notifications, from ‘Snapchat Stories’ to ‘WhatsApp Messages’ to ‘Instagram Post Notifications’, most of which were completely irrelevant to me. I then started my usual morning pre-breakfast ritual of checking my messages, catching up on my Twitter Feed, browsing Instagram until I’d found the last picture I’d viewed before putting my phone on charge the previous night, then looking at Facebook if there was nothing else to do.

After finishing this, I came to the conclusion there were Way Too Many Ways that people got get hold of me, and to answer all my messages and communication I had to switch between so many apps it was destroying my battery life. When your iPhone 6Plus battery drops from 100% to 89% before 07:00am you know there is an issue.

So what do I do about it? It didn’t take me long to come to realise I didn’t need Snapchat, or really need to see anything that was on there. That Went first, before 07:30am I was Snapchat Free and was already thinking how could I build up this (I don’t do things in half measures) and scale back even further.

I then turned my attention to WhatsApp messenger, I asked myself what do I actually use this for? Group chats that I usually just skip through, a few random chats that could easily switch to SMS, and after checking my storage I found I was only really talking to one person. It was decided, WhatsApp was next to go……. I started with a message to all the people I’ve had recent conversations with to inform them I was deleting the app and moving back to SMS, the main person I speak to is a work colleague so I had a face to face to let them know. I deleted all conversations they followed a simple step process to delete the account, it was done and dusted within a few minutes. 890mb of storage better off on my phone and my blood pressure will improve as I will no longer want to take off my Apple Watch and throw it across the room everything I get a WhatsApp notification to my watch that I’m unable to read fully. (That’s another issue all together)

With WhatsApp gone, I turned my attentions Instagram. After the large amount of users begging to turn on notifications to their page I decided to scale back the amount of people I follow on Intagram, this took some time as Intagram is my favourite Social Network. After around 30minutes of going through the 460 people I follow on Instagram, and much deliberation over a few I was down to a much more manageable number of 226 people. My hope is that that with the new imminent changes to the Instagram feed, this scaling back process will have helped with the time I spend on Instagram and hopefully not miss important posts.

So I’m writing this with one last task, to go through my Facebook feed and mute the most annoying posts from people who aren’t really friends and I wasn’t man enough to ignore their friend request. This worked for my Twitter feed which is probably the only social network that doesn’t need my attention. 

Facebook is the one I’m not looking forward to sorting out.

When I’ve had a week of my new scaled down digital life, I’ll report back with my findings and the impact to my iPhone battery.
